Introduction to mapping

Today we first started with the meaning of a map. One of our instructors has prepared a presentation aiming to make us become more familiar with the concept of mapping. A map is defined as a visual representation.

By using maps, people aim to make complex information more understandable by abstracting that concept. Maps can be used in a variety of ways and mapping is the act of creating maps. There is even DNA mapping which suggests that mapping can be used in many different contexts.

Maps are a symbolic representation of the actual visual thing. When creating these representations, some ideas dissolve while some ideas (depending on the aim of the map) becomes more predominant.
